It was the fourth quarter, a full stadium was basking in the sun and Giants quarterback Eli Manning, well protected by his linemen for a change, coolly lofted a tight spiral toward his favorite receiver, Victor Cruz. It was third down and all the Giants needed was a little inspiration, and 6 yards, to keep a good groove going.

But the normally sure-handed Cruz, the wide receiver the home fans fete by cooing his name — Crruuuzz — dropped the ball. The stands went silent and an unease enveloped the building.

Within a minute, the Arizona Cardinals returned a Giants punt for a touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, the Giants fumbled, which led to another Cardinals score. One possession later, with the game in its closing minutes, a promising, potentially game-tying drive by the Giants crashed to a halt near the Cardinals’ goal line with another fumble, this one unforced.

A game the Giants seemed to have in hand Sunday became a 25-14 defeat at MetLife Stadium, keeping the Giants winless through two games. For the second consecutive week, Coach Tom Coughlin stood next to his team’s locker room and uttered a scary word: “Nightmare.”
