One of the biggest wrestling news stories of this year has been the sudden, unceremonious departure of CM Punk from World Wrestling Entertainment. On the night after the Royal Rumble, with about an hour before Raw went live, Punk allegedly told WWE Chairman Vince McMahon that he was going home, and proceeded to do just that.
Originally, this wasn’t seen as a permanent thing. Despite the fact that Punk’s contract was up in July and he planned to leave the company, people close to the situation felt cooler heads would prevail. In a conference call in February, McMahon described Punk’s departure as “a sabbatical.” Stone Cold Steve Austin, a friend of Punk’s with a high-profile WWE walkout under his own belt, guaranteed that the Straight Edge Superstar would be back at WrestleMania; of course, that never came to pass.
As the months have elapsed (and the contract in question has expired), it’s become clear that CM Punk is done with WWE. We’re told never to say never in professional wrestling, but bad blood on both sides – exacerbated by a recently-filed lawsuit in which Punk is seeking merchandising royalties – makes a reconciliation seem unlikely.
Still, maybe none of this should have come as a surprise. It had become clear that Punk was unhappy in WWE, and it was only a matter of time before he left. Let’s look at 10 signs that the “Voice of the Voiceless” was on his way out of the company.
